A 61-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting his landlord Sunday night on the property they shared near the Golden Acorn Casino in East County, authorities said.
Paul David Carr was booked into jail on a count of murder in the death of the 55-year-old victim, whose name was withheld.
Carr rented a house from the victim on the property on Old Highway 80, sheriff’s homicide Lt. Kenn Nelson said, adding that there are two or three other houses on the land.
Family members of the victim who also live there heard gunshots shortly before 7:30 p.m. They found the victim lying on the ground in front of the garage of his home, Nelson said.
Deputies started first aid until paramedics arrived, but the victim died despite life-saving efforts.
Nelson said the man left behind adult children, who were at the property when deputies arrived. The lieutenant didn’t know whether the victim was married.
After the shooting, Carr was detained as a “person of interest,” interviewed by homicide detectives, then booked into jail.
Nelson said investigators believe an argument could have led to the shooting. They had not determined what the possible dispute was about or whether it was ongoing.
Nelson said the Medical Examiner’s Office will complete an autopsy and confirm the victim’s identity.
