A Clairemont man suspected of beating his 87-year-old father with a crowbar called police Thursday night to report the attack, and was arrested, authorities said.
The father was sleeping when Charles Duval started striking him, then choking him, with the crowbar, San Diego police said.
They said the father struggled to defend himself. He was hospitalized in serious condition, but is expected to survive, police said.
The two men live together at a home on Diane Avenue, north of Cobb Drive. They had gotten into an argument Thursday night, and later the father went to bed, police said.
Duval, 62, called 911 minutes before midnight and said he’d attacked his father with a crowbar, police said.
He is alleged to have struck and choked his father with the metal bar, then punched the older man with his fists.
Police said Duval disabled the telephone, so his father was not able to use it to call for help.
Duval was at the home when officers got there, and he surrendered without a struggle, police said. Duval was jailed on suspicion of attempted murder and elder abuse.
