Four WPIAL championship golfers qualified for the PIAA semifinals Monday, but only two made it to the final round.
Riverside’s Skyler Fox and Central Valley’s Kiaria Porter were the WPIAL champs who advanced, while Fox Chapel’s Gregor Meyer and North Allegheny’s Caroline Wrigley were the champs who failed to qualify. Both boys and girls semifinal rounds were played at Tom’s Run Golf Course in Blairsville.
Fox finished fourth in Class AA boys with a 4-over 76. Quaker Valley’s Chris Tanabe and Laurel’s Evan Long tied for first at 73.
In Class AA girls, Porter tied for fifth with an 84. Two WPIAL golfers took the top two spots as Greensburg Central Catholic’s Olivia Zambruno finished first with 75 and Tatum McKelvey was second with 76. Zambruno is trying to become the first WPIAL girl to win three consecutive PIAA titles.
Zambruno finished second at the WPIAL championships. Her younger sister, Abby, also qualified for the PIAA championship by finishing fourth with an 82.
In Class AAA boys, Meyer finished 14th with an 81. Only the top 12 advanced. Latrobe’s Brady Pavarnik finished first with 70 while Central Catholic’s Matt DelRosso was third at 73.
In Class AAA girls, Wrigley needed to finish in the top six to move on, but she placed eighth with an 80. Pine-Richland’s Lauren Freyvogel and Peters Townships Mia Kness tied for first at 71.
The PIAA championships are Monday and Tuesday at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York. The team competitions are Wednesday.
