Michael Wipfli was SACKED by Hamish Blake and Andy Lee

Michael Wipfli is a familiar face in the Australian entertainment industry after striking up a winning partnership with Ryan Fitzgerald on Nova FM.

But the broadcaster, who is nicknamed Wippa, has revealed how his route to the top was dealt a blow by fellow radio bigwigs Hamish Blake and Andy Lee.

Speaking to Rachel Corbett on the You’ve Gotta Start Somewhere podcast, Wippa told how the Fox FM duo sacked him – having originally helped to land him a job in the early 2000s.

‘Hamish and Andy had started to do some stuff [at Fox FM in Melbourne], and they said “I reckon we can get you back to town if you’re keen to do some panel work”,’ he recalled.

But the gig wasn’t destined to last, with Wippa admitting he was ‘terrible’ at the job before one incident proved to be the final straw.

He said: ‘Hamish and Andy were doing a summer show, and one morning I remember feeling my phone vibrating under my shirt behind my back.

‘I’d been at a friend’s Christmas party and I’d fallen asleep on the phone in bed and I was late, completely late.’

After frantically rushing into the studio, the popular radio presenter was informed by his boss that the arrangement ‘wasn’t working out’.

‘I said “I couldn’t agree more. Don’t soften the blow, I’d sack myself as well”,’ he recalled.
