Jose Mourinho reminded Chelsea of his tactical genius as Manchester United blew the Premier League title race wide open with a deserved win.
Marcus Rashford scored the opening goal in the first half before Ander Herrera doubled it with a deflected effort in the second.
Sportsmail reporter Alex Martin rates how both sets of players performed at Old Trafford on Easter Sunday.
Every Manchester United player proved superior to his Chelsea counterpart at Old Trafford
Manchester United (4-4-2)
David De Gea – 6.5
Had very little to do in the game but always looked ready to spring into action.
Antonio Valencia – 6.5
Was given the day off by Marcos Alonso’s late withdrawal. Untroubled by Cesar Azpilicueta and, later, Victor Moses.
Marcos Rojo – 7
More focused on winding Diego Costa up than stopping him from scoring but executed both tasks very well.
Marcos Rojo took it upon himself to play chief agitator to Chelsea striker Diego Costa
Eric Bailly – 7
Did not partake in the dark arts like Rojo. Stuck to the task of playing football and covered the gaps well.
Matteo Darmian – 6
Lost Pedro twice in quick succession in the second half to gift the Spaniard the opportunities to score but otherwise solid.
Marouane Fellaini – 7.5
An incredibly strong presence in midfield as per usual. Did the basics well and rarely found out of position, if at all.
Ander Herrera – 8.5
Created the first with a sublime pass and scored the second. Man-marked Eden Hazard out of the game and Jose Mourinho’s likely choice for man of the match.
Ander Herrera was Manchester United’s all-action utility man across the entire midfield
Ashley Young – 6
Made a hash of two decent first-half opportunities. More of a passenger on the Manchester United gravy train.
Paul Pogba – 6.5
A quiet game but flashes of quality from a man who looks in need of an extended rest after a hectic 12 months.
Jesse Lingard – 7
Linked up well with Rashford in an unfamiliar forward position but not nearly as threatening in front of goal.
Marcus Rashford – 8.5
Burned David Luiz for pace en route to scoring the opening goal, something not even Zlatan Ibrahimovic could have done. A constant problem for Chelsea’s defence.
Marcus Rashford celebrates after opening the scoring for Manchester United in the first-half
Carrick (Lingard 60) – 6; Ibrahimovic – 5.5 (Rashford 83)
Subs not used: Romero; Blind; Fosu-Mensah; Shaw; Mkhitaryan; Ibrahimovic
Manager: Jose Mourinho – 8
Asmir Begovic – 5
Went down too early for Rashford’s goal but unsighted by the second.
Kurt Zouma* – 5
His superior speed made him an obvious choice to mark Marcus Rashford but he was never given the opportunity.
David Luiz – 4
Regularly beaten for pace, strength and intelligence by a man much lighter and inexperienced in Marcus Rashford.
David Luiz found himself being out-thought and out-fought by the outstanding Rashford
Gary Cahill – 4.5
Bizarrley helped Jesse Lingard up in the box just before Manchester United scored their second goal.
Victor Moses – 4
Had to be moved from the right wing to the left after failing to handle Ashley Young. An anonymous figure.
N’Golo Kante 5
Marginalised by Mourinho’s tactics. Not the kind of performance we have become used to seeing from the likely PFA Player of the Year.
Nemanja Matic – 6.5
Always available in midfield and one of few Chelsea players to leave Old Trafford with respect.
Eden Hazard was marked out of the game by Herrera before moving into a forward position
Cesar Azpilicueta – 5.5
Played on the left to replace Marcos Alonso. Typically solid performance from the Spaniard in difficult circumstances.
Pedro Rodriguez – 5
Found himself in space several times in the second half but failed to take a grasp of his opportunities.
Eden Hazard – 5.5
Completely dumbfounded by the relentless presence of Ander Herrera. Positionally lost but at least he kept trying.
Diego Costa – 4
Allowed himself to get distracted by the wind-up antics of Marcos Rojo before seeming to given up. Looked more likely to see red than score.
Costa allowed himself to become frustrated with the antics of Rojo
Cesc Fabregas (Moses 53)- 5; Willian (Matic 66)- 5; Loftus-Cheek (Zouma 83) – 5.
Subs not used: Eduardo; Terry; Loftus-Cheek; Willian; Batshuayi; Ake
Manager: Antonio Conte – 5
*Marcos Alonso withdrawn after warm-up.
