A 37-year-old Lansing man was charged Tuesday with allegedly robbing a Homer Glen gas station and stealing a car, officials said.
Robert A. Bennett, of the 18000 block of Oakwood Avenue, was charged with armed robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated vehicular hijacking and felony use of a firearm after he allegedly displayed a shot gun and demanded money early Tuesday at a Speedway Gas Station in the 15000 block of S. Bell Road, according to Will County Sheriff’s office.
He was being held on a $1 million bond at the Will County jail, officials said
Bennett allegedly struck a gas station employee and took an undermined amount of cash, as well as a purse that belonged to another customer who was in the station at the time, a sheriff’s office statement said.
Police believe Bennett then left the store, and crashed the vehicle he was driving on Bell Road and 151st Street, officials said.
“The suspect returned to the gas station and took a vehicle from a customer pumping gas after displaying a gun,” the sheriff’s office statement said.
Police tracked Bennett to a Hi-Way Motel in Markham, where he was “taken into custody without incident,” officials said.
“Victims from the armed robbery were able to positively identify Bennett as the offender,” the statement said.
