An elderly married couple were found dead in their East Harlem apartment Sunday after they apparently left the oven on overnight, causing the home to fill with gas, authorities said.
The 81-year-old man and his 71-year-old wife had plans to attend Easter Mass at their local church with their family when they were discovered by their daughter, Rita, around 9 a.m., the grief stricken woman told The Post.
“We were supposed to go to church today,” said the daughter, who only gave her first name.
“I know my father couldn’t live without my mother, and my mother couldn’t live without my father. Now at least they are together.”
The FDNY responded to 911 call at the building on First Avenue near East 101st Street where Firefighters found the couple dead inside the fifth floor apartment, officials said.
Police said it appeared the oven had been left on overnight.
“I knew it was bad,” said a man who identified himself as Gary, adding that he was the couple’s son-in-law. “You could smell the gas.”
The building was not evacuated, and there were no other injuries reported.
The incident is still under investigation.
