Bulls shooting guard Dwyane Wade is one of the most stylish guys in the NBA. He’s as comfortable on the court as he is at Paris Fashion Week rocking looks from Dior or Givenchy. Wade and his wife, Gabrielle Union, regularly land on best-dressed lists. He’s appeared numerous times in the pages of GQ magazine and always surprises with his highly personal style.
Whether he goes classic or flashy, this dude knows how to dress.
We caught up with Wade to talk style at the Nordstrom launch of his Wade X Naked collab with Naked Underwear.
Q: You have been on several best-dressed lists. What’s the Dwyane Wade look?
A: I don’t know if I have a look. I think you go with the trends and try to find your own space. I like pushing the envelope and adding my own touches to it.
Q: You’ve done collaborations with Tie Bar, Swiss watchmaker Hublo, among others. How did you become involved with Naked?
A: The relationship with Naked really came as authentic as any one I’ve ever been a part of. I was gifted a pair of their underwear, and I was going to work out one day. And the thing I loved about them, I didn’t even notice that I had these underwear on. Comfort is No. 1 for me. If it doesn’t fit with what I’m wearing, there’s a problem. These fit with my workout gear. A lot of times it’s hard to hard to put your underwear on with your tights.
I don’t like them to be seen. I don’t like lines. You want your underwear to feel invisible. After that, we reached out to the company, and the conversation started from there.
Q: Speaking of naked, you posed naked for ESPN’s body issue. Tell us about that experience.
Really naked. That was something I never planned on doing. With the partnership with Naked, I thought it was just the right time. I started talking more about being comfortable in my own skin — that was the message.
Q: Do you and Gabrielle coordinate your look before going out together, or do you surprise each other?
A: Absolutely not. I help her get dressed way more than she helps me. We have duel closets, so she gets dressed, I get dressed.
Q: What’s the best part of being a power couple?
A: I don’t look at us as a power couple. I think that when people see us, they just at us as two regular people.
Q: How do your teammates react to your style?
A: Well, my teammates in Miami always had comments. There was always surprise with what I wore.
My teammates In Chicago haven’t had a chance to experience my style yet. They know a little bit about what I do, but they haven’t seen it up close and personal.
Q: What’s your favorite off-court sneaker?
A: Mine, of course.
Q: What’s the most over-the-top thing you’ve worn recently?
A: Well that’s the thing — for me, it’s not over the top. Right, I don’t feel that anything I put on is over the top.
Q: Whose style do you really admire? Why?
A: I think one person I always looked at stylewise was Justin Timberlake. It’s him and David Beckham. They’re little, (laughs) so the clothes look a little better.
I just like how fresh they stay and how they are always switching it up and changing up their style.
Q: What should every guy have in his wardrobe?
A: A black suit, and you can never have enough white shirts.
Q: What fall trends are you looking forward to wearing?
A: Well, I’m in Chicago now, so for me, it’s all about the coats, it’s all about the furs. How can I dress up as crazy as I can with my coats.
Q: What music do you listen to to decompress?
A: When I want I chill, I throw on the new Usher CD.
When I need a little extra energy, I throw on Chance.
Q: Do you prefer scruff or shaven?
A: For the most part, shaven. I like to be clean-cut, clean-shaven.
Q: Favorite product?
Nivea lotion is my thing right now.
Tom Ford White Suede
Q: What’s the best holiday gift you ever got?
A: I’m very appreciative of any gift I get.
Well, the coolest gift for me was the gift I got two Christmases ago from my dad. The way we grew up, I never got a lot of gifts. Now, at this age, he bought me one of his first gifts. It was a robe with my name on it. I wear a lot of robes, so it was my go-to robe.
Q: What’s the best gift you ever gave?
A: Well, I give amazing gifts (laughs).
The best gift I ever gave was that ring that my wife is wearing. That was a pretty cool gift.
Q: What does Dwyane Wade want for Christmas?
A: A win. Since we are playing on Christmas. And just seeing my loved ones enjoy what the holiday is about, celebrating together and just being thankful.
