County councilman proposes raising members' stipends

Allegheny County Councilman Mike Finnerty today proposed raising the expense allowance and per meeting stipend for council members effective in 2020.

“This is an adjustment of our expense account allowance, which hasn’t been adjusted since the year 2000,” said Mr. Finnerty, D-Scott.

The increase, in accordance with the Home Rule Charter outline of 5 percent every five years, would boost the reimbursement for travel, equipment and supplies from $3,000 to $3,646.52. The stipend would climb from $9,000 to $10,932.55 per year.

“It’s not for anybody that’s sitting here,” Mr. Finnerty said, stressing the 2020 effective date. “It’s for the county council seat.”

Both proposals were forwarded to the council’s Government Reform Committee for consideration.
