Bicyclist hurt after hitting steel plate in roadway

A 58-year-old bicyclist was taken to the hospital with head injuries Sunday morning after she struck a steel plate in the road in Bay Park.

The woman suffered bleeding on the brain, but the injury was not considered life threatening, according to San Diego police.

She was riding west on Garnet Avenue near Santa Fe Street around 10 a.m. when she hit the plate, which was put on the road to cover ongoing repair work. She lost control and was thrown from her bike.

The traffic division of the San Diego Police Department is investigating.
